CONDOR

Great shot of a Condor in action in 1976.
The English really where building beautiful machines during this period.
I know I will probably regret writing this, but....
If I had to choose between a '76 Colnago or the above '76 Condor,
 both running the same gear,
I am not so sure the choice would be that easy for me.

GEORGE AND KAHU WHAREHOKA

George and his younger brother Kahu, celebrate their first and second placings in the 1951 edition of the 100 mile Round the Mountain Classic.
Kahu who still at school at the time was instructed by his brother to attack towards the end of the race. When George saw that Kahu was safe in his win, he sprinted the field for second place.
Kahu Wharehoka, like his brother, where happier on the track.
George sprints Malcolm Simpson to the line in the 1956(?) 3 mile NZ Championship.

LEGNANO ROAD AND TRACK

These are some photos taken a while back of a Ron Cheatley's track bike and a road bike that I restored.
The road bike had originally belonged to the great New Zealand road man
Richie Thomson, who unfortunately passed away last year.
I did a tribute painting of Richie for an piece that I wrote about him for NZ Bike magazine.
He is riding this bike in the painting

If you like these photos I will have some more on the new blog coming soon

SOME NZ DULUX SIX DAY RACE PHOTOS AND THE NEW BLOG

NEW CLASSIC NEW ZEALAND RACING BLOG COMING...

I have decided to set up another blog solely dedicated to the history of New Zealand's most famous tours the Wisemans Six Day Tour  1953-58 and the Dulux Six Day Tour 1960-1985, I will also include any info I come across on the later seven day tours until 1990.
It is called The Wolves of the Road.

Anyway for now here are a few of Dulux photos from the collection to get you interested.

1920's/30's LEADER SUPERB

Here is a very early Leader, probably 1920's-30's and one of the older New Zealand race bikes in my collection.
I do have a several other frame sets of a similar vintage, but not in such original competition condition as this one.
This is from Clarke's Cycles in Auckland you can view a short write up on their history here.

Top end BSA double fluted cranks/chainwheel with matching pedals (one missing)
R/H drop still has one of it's original anti shock hand grips, which where quite popular at the time, and looking at photos of the roads that they raced on then, not surprising.
Braze on seat tube chain oilier, above off, below on. These where meant to keep chain smooth running on the dusty or muddy unsealed roads of the time.
The oil is contained in the seat tube, which has been sealed at the B/B, and then just by turning the pipe down, oil will drip onto the chain, insuring your trouble free run to victory....

Standard star braze on ornaments, common through this period on many race bikes.
Major Taylor with spcific light bracket fitting.
Narrow 28 inch rims with butted spokes, obviously saving weight has always been high on list for wheelmen. This machine was a well equipped and competitive mount for it's lucky owner at the time.
Nice hand painted name and high lights

Mercian

I picked up a nice little late model Canon Power Shot digital camera from the opp    the other week (for two bucks!), and after a little brutal repair work managed to get it operating, well sort of.
As you can see from these photos it seems to work pretty good in the wet anyway.

When push comes to shove, I always seem to end up using the trusty '67 Mercian, which has done me proud on all kinds of projects and missions.
Set up with full Bluemels guards and usually a front and/or rear bags, it truly is an all purpose mount.
Think I will have to treat it to some new bar tape.
